In The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, the Dark Brotherhood works secretly as a group of highly trained assassins. They take on missions to eliminate specific targets, except for members within their own guild. The condition for accepting these tasks is that the client must offer a satisfactory payment for the services.

What is the Dark Brotherhood?

The Dark Brotherhood is like a rebellious offshoot of the Morag Tong, an authorized assassins’ guild in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Unlike the Morag Tong, which is based mainly in the Morrowind province and is traditionally respected but feared, the Dark Brotherhood has become a covert and mysterious underground cult. This secretive group follows Sithis, who represents destruction and the Void, making it distinctly different from the more conventional and publicly recognized Morag Tong.

Recruitment

When someone commits murder, the Night Mother, hidden in the shadows, keeps a close eye. Afterward, when the killer seeks refuge in a secure place, a Speaker emerges. The Speaker invites the murderer to join the Dark Brotherhood, and upon acceptance, a specific target is assigned for elimination.

In a similar way, Argonians born under the Shadow sign in Black Marsh go through training with an order called the “Shadowscales.” After their training, they seamlessly become part of the Dark Brotherhood. The Brotherhood also employs subtle ways to recruit. If a series of cold-blooded murders occurs without capture, the organization investigates to identify the potential recruit.

The killing spree continues until the Brotherhood reveals the killer’s identity. At this point, a courier is sent with a message, urging the execution of a designated individual. After successfully completing this task, another missive arrives, this time demanding the covert assassination (an untraceable murder) of another specific target. Once accomplished to satisfaction, the Dark Brotherhood sends a third courier, providing contact details for further collaboration.

How to Join the Organization

When the Hero of Kvatch takes the life of an innocent person (excluding those crucial to quests or already hostile), a message appears, saying, “Your act of slaying has been witnessed by enigmatic forces…”

After finding a safe place to rest, Lucien Lachance, a representative of the Black Hand, appears. Giving the quest “A Knife in the Dark” and providing the Blade of Woe, Lucien Lachance instructs the Hero to eliminate an angry elderly man named Rufio, living in the Inn of Ill Omen.

Once Rufio is gone, the Hero must sleep, and Lucien Lachance will visit, offering them membership. If they choose to kill him while he’s asleep, along with others who are sleeping, they can pickpocket him for more gold than just killing him. After pickpocketing, a simple knife to the back will finish the job.
