Check out this guide to learn the ways how to complete the Permanent Retirement quest in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Discover the alternative methods on how to finish the quest peacefully.
One of the quests in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is called Permanent Retirement. This quest will require to kill Adamus Phillida, one of the guard captains in Leyawiin. Unlike the other quests, this mission is known for being bugged. There are many players who have been killing Adamus Phillida without being detected but still getting a bounty. This results in guards attacking you, paying fines, and being thrown to the jail.
Fortunately, there’s a way to bypass the Permanent Retirement bug and you no longer have to pay fines and go to jail. If you’re wondering how it is done, make sure to take note of the guide below.
What You Need to Do First
- Join and enter the Dark Brotherhood until you get this quest.
- Join the Thieves Guild until you get at least 1 Doyen. It could be S’krivva in Bravi or Armand Christophe in Imperial City Waterfront.
- Upgrade your Sneak skill then wear the Shrouded Armor that you will be receiving upon joining Dark Brotherhood, or just use Invisitibilty potions.
Execute The Mission
Step 1
Go to Leyawiin with your special arrow such as Rose of Sithis and hide behind a rock. Wait until the time hits 3:00 PM as this is the time where your target will go swimming. His swimming place will be in a pond found near the castle. Adamus Phillida will be taking off his armors and once taken off, attack him using your special arrows to instantly kill him. Before you continue, make sure to save the game progress.
After saving, immediately reload your weapon. Reloading your weapon is required as his bodyguard may visit him to check his situation. Upon taking him down, sneak and loot his finger and keys. If you executed the mission correctly, the bodyguard will not appear. Else, the guard will attack you and give you a bounty.
Step 2
Assuming that you succeed without being seen by the guards or no bounty on your head, fast travel and see one of the Doyens. You can choose between S’krivva or Armand Christophe. In case you see guards, just avoid and never talk to them.
As mentioned above, even there’s no bounty on your head, the guards will arrest you due to the bug. So, the only way is to avoid them. Talk to Doyen, who will remove the bounty on your head (even if you don’t have one) for just 20 gold. You can speak with the guards after this.
Step 3
Continue and complete the quest. You can also do the other objective for more rewards. Since you already have the key looted from Phillida’s body, you will gain the access to some rooms. To end the mission, just head back to Ocheeva and put Phillida’s finger on the desk.
Alternative Method
Obviously, you’re playing the game for fun. But if you just want to end this quest as fast as possible, just open the console (~) and click on Phillida and type “kill”. This will instantly kill the character but you still need to silently loot his body for the keys to get the optional objectives.
