Here’s how to make your controller work while playing RiMS Racing on the Steam Deck. Initially, the game doesn’t pick up the controller, only the keyboard commands.
Requirements
- First, switch to Desktop Mode on your Steam Deck.
- Next, get Protontricks. You can find it in the app discovery section in Desktop Mode by searching for ‘protontricks’. If you’re not familiar with Protontricks on the Steam Deck, look it up for more guidance.
- Once you have Protontricks installed, use it to tweak the Windows version to Windows 7.
- Lastly, go to the game properties on Steam and add a launch command. This should help resolve any issues you’re facing with RimS.
Note: This trick, initially proposed by Mominjo on ProtonDB for WRC 9 FIA World Rally Championship, which runs on the KT Engine, has been successfully tested on RimS, yielding excellent results!
How to Fix Controller Issues on Steam Deck
Here’s a step-by-step guide to implementing the fix for RiMs Racing:
- Install RiMs Racing and switch to Desktop Mode.
- Open Protontricks, choose RiMs Racing, and confirm with OK. After a moment, select the default wineprefix and confirm again with OK.
- Next, select Run winecfg and confirm with OK. This will open the Wine Configuration window for RiMs Racing. Make sure you’re in the Application tab.
- At the bottom of the window, switch the Windows version to Windows 7 and click Apply.
- Locate RiMs Racing in your Steam Library, click Manage, then select Properties.
- Scroll down to Launch Options and paste the following command into the box:
STEAM_COMPAT_CONFIG="" %command%
Following these steps should resolve the issue. Note that the Proton version used shouldn’t be critical, but I’m running it on Proton Experimental, just for your information.
