Some of you may be wondering, where the hell do I place these fortifications? And then proceed to place them in the dumbest areas possible on a hard point. It’s okay in this guide we will go through my theory (I think it’s pretty reasonable) on where to place barb wire, bunkers, etc. The main points we will go through are Barb wire theory and Barricade and bunker theory.
Proper placement goes Barbwire-Bunker lv3-Barricades-everything else. This guide will hopefully give u a better understanding of how proper fortifications should be built and placed on a strong point, maximum kill efficiency, and minimal losses.
Barbwire Theory
Barbwire is the single most important asset to a fortification system in hell let loose, it is your first defense against all hell.
If done correctly:
- It will funnel enemy troops into locations and stop them from entering others.
- Dictate the attack direction of enemy forces and slow major pushes.
- Provide an safe distance from advancing troops to the strong point and friendly spawns
Understanding these words as barbwire can quite literally change the outcome of the game. Satchels are still not used enough and inexperienced players may assume certain barbwire are map assets. Even if satchels are used the remaining barbwire will still retain some defensive effectiveness. Do not put barbwire near friendly spawns, right in front of bunkers/fortifications or places were friendly troops moving to and from in mass. Too many times I see players put barbwire in front of a bunker thinking it will have as much effect as it is placed anywhere else. Please stop putting them right next to garrisons or in the back-line.
Barbwire should be placed as far head forward as reasonably possible to:
- Force a distance from friendly positions, negating grenades and forcing the enemy to cross an open field of fire.
- Keep the enemy away from the friendly placed bunkers for as long as possible.
By doing this the enemy is forced to, get to the barbwire, blow it up, cross an open field, then try and take the bunkers, all while under fire.
Here is a picture of the greatest barbwire link I’ve seen in the game on WN7, Utah map. The Barbwire encloses all of the objectives, past the strong point, and ends at open fields. There are trenches, bunkers, and buildings that can be occupied by friendlies. By keeping the distance and making it as long as possible, the barb wire fence prevents the enemy’s from effective flanking attacks and disorderly front lines/back lines.
Now of course you’re going to need a lot of engineers to place barb wire to get its maximum effect. however, 6 engineers can build 24 barb wire fences which cover a lot of ground and costs minimal supplies. Competent supply lines are becoming more common and it won’t be hard to ask a supply dude or a driver to drop them ahead of the strong point.
Barricade and Bunker Theory
Barricades and bunkers are your second line of defense and should be held as long as possible Bunkers are to be built first, always, they are the strongest fortification against attacks IDC what anyone says and they look cool. Assuming you follow my theory on barb wire then you will have a good distance from the barbwire, an open field perhaps to make you Killzone from barricades and bunkers.
Bunkers:
Place them where they have a wide range of fire and support them with barricades to create a fort system. Too many times I see bunkers placed on roads in the backline(which is fine only if the front is fortified) or places where their line of sight is poor. A good bunker can cover a wide field or group of buildings. It shouldn’t be placed in a spot that can easily be overrun by an enemy push coming from cover, open fields and positions are your best bet. Ideally, they are not around your garrison but are being used in a way that prevents the enemy from even getting close to your garrison.
Barricades:
Barricades are similar and should complement bunkers and link with map asset cover. They should not be put forward and should cover as much area as possible. Don’t put them in the middle of a field, in the backline, or at a stop that has a poor line of sight. It is crucial that they are put far from your barb wire and near the strong point all while not being built in mass at a single point. Use them wisely because they will provide the enemy with cover if overran. They can be built semi-close to your garrison but do not waste them and leave other areas of attack open.

Here is some poor placement:
Here is some better but not perfect placement:
Place these johns wisely, they create great firing positions and prevent certain flanks from falling.
