I recently acquired Sonic Team Racing and found it to be a highly enjoyable gaming experience. However, I encountered some significant performance issues, including severe slowdowns and occasional stuttering. To exacerbate matters, the game would intermittently limit the frames per second (FPS) to 30 or 60 during specific in-game actions or locations, as if it were intentionally restricted to run on a less powerful console. After some trial and error and a bit of research, I managed to identify a solution to mitigate these problems and unleash the game’s full potential. It’s worth noting that I haven’t used an AMD graphics card since they were known as ATI, so I cannot guarantee the effectiveness of this method in an AMD configuration.

NVIDIA Control Panel Setup

To begin, launch the NVIDIA Configuration Control Panel. Navigate to the “Manage 3D programs” section and select “Program settings.” Locate Sonic Team Racing in the list. If you don’t see a profile for it, run Sonic Team Racing at least once, then click the “Add” button. Afterward, choose “GameApp_PcDx11_x64Final.” Once you’ve either found or added the profile, proceed to make the following adjustments:

  • Preferred Graphics Processor: High-Performance NVIDIA Processor
  • Low Latency mode: Ultra
  • Max Frame Rate: 250 (anything above 240 will unlock FPS; 120 works too)
  • Power management Mode: Prefer Maximum Performance
  • Thread Optimization: On
  • Vertical Sync: Off (Do not turn off Vsync in game)
  • Virtual Reality Frames: Use 3D application Settings

Windows Graphics Profile Setup

If you wish to add a Windows graphics profile, follow these steps:

  1. Begin by typing “graphics” into the Windows search field and select “Graphics Settings.”
  2. Click the “Browse” button and locate the file named “GameApp_PcDx11_x64Final.” You can find this file within the Steamapp/common folder. For example, it might be located at: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Sonic Racing
  3. After adding the .exe file to the Graphics profile, click on the application in the list, then press “Options,” and set it to “High performance.”

By following these steps, not only will the game run smoother and faster, but you’ll also experience less lag in the menus. I hope this information proves helpful to both new and experienced players looking to maximize their experience with the PC version of Sonic Team Racing.
