Mastering the different classes in Paladins might be tricky, especially for new players. However, if you aim to be responsible and fill any missing role with confidence, you’ve come to the right guide.

The (somewhat) Curious Case of Paladins' Support Classes – The Daily SPUF

Damage/DPS

Starting with the Damage class in Paladins, it’s often the first choice for many players (unless they’re a Lex main).

1. Your Job is Dealing Damage

Your primary goal as a Damage champion is to dish out as much damage as possible while securing kills. Keep in mind that each Damage champion has a unique playstyle, depending on your preference.

Examples:

  • Champions with a high Rate of Fire (RoF) and decent damage are great for pressuring the enemy Frontline, breaking their shields, and taking down exposed targets.
  • On the flip side, champions with slow RoF but high damage (like snipers) aren’t effective against the enemy Frontline. Instead, focus on eliminating other Damage champions or even the support with precise shots. Positioning is crucial for these champions.

2. Position Yourself Smartly Around the Objective

For positioning, find a strategic spot near or around the objective that benefits both you and your team. Look for vantage points behind natural cover like walls, boxes, or rocks. Changing your shooting spot occasionally prevents enemies from catching on and attempting a surprise attack.

3. Use Abilities Wisely

Exercise patience with your abilities. Some players impulsively use them, even using ultimates on a single target or during overtime due to overconfidence. Unless it’s the deciding moment, refrain from using your ultimate during overtime. This advice applies to every role in the game.

Flank

Now, let’s delve into the Flank class. If you’re finding it challenging to grasp Flank characters, don’t worry. Learning to play the Flank class is considered the toughest in the game, so take your time practicing, and these tips might make it a bit easier for you.

1. Your Job is to Secure Kills

As a Flank, start by scouting the area to ensure a safe route to the enemy’s side. Sneak into their back-line and aim to eliminate 1 or even 2 players. Ideally, target the Support first; if not visible, focus on the Damage characters. Taking out the Support provides a significant advantage for your team, and if successful, it’s the perfect opportunity to disrupt the enemy team.

2. Stay in Their Back-line

Flank positioning might be tricky initially, but it boils down to watching their spawn and intercepting anyone heading back to the objective. Shooting someone off their mount as they leave spawn can be a sneaky way to secure the objective. After that, plan your next move strategically.

3. Know When to Retreat

Maintain an aggressive playstyle, but not overly aggressive. While you may rack up kills, avoid overextending to minimize deaths. When low on health, it’s crucial to retreat to your healer. Chasing a Flank can be tedious, so make it easier for your team. If trying to eliminate the enemy healer attracts too much attention and leads to repeated deaths, it’s time to rethink your strategy. Don’t fall into the same trap repeatedly; adapt and find alternative approaches.

Frontline/Tank

Now, let’s discuss the often perceived as less exciting role of playing a Tank. While it might not be everyone’s favorite, understanding the essentials can make it more engaging when you need to step into this role.

1. Your Main Duty is Holding the Objective

As a Tank, your primary responsibility is holding the objective. Frontline champions boast the highest health pool in the game, so don’t hesitate to take your place on the objective. However, it’s wise to wait for 1 or 2 teammates to join you for coverage. Even with your substantial health, avoid jumping onto the point alone if the team numbers are not in your favor.

2. Control the Battlefield

Frontlines not only defend the objective but also control space effectively. Moving a few steps forward with a shield can be intimidating, covering a large area of ground is a form of threat, and employing crowd control adds to your commanding presence. It’s all about asserting dominance on the battlefield.

3. Strategically Use Your Abilities

When the situation allows, strategically use your abilities. Tanks deal with various forms of damage and crowd control on the point, so it’s crucial to figure out the best ability for each scenario. However, there are instances where chaos reigns, and you might need to use more than one ability simultaneously. In such cases, go ahead and do what it takes to maintain control.

Support/Healer

Now, let’s explore the Support class, which may not be the most appealing to newer players, but it can turn out to be surprisingly enjoyable if approached with the right mindset.

1. Choose the Right Talent

As a Support, your main role is to heal your team. While this might be obvious, what sets supports apart is their talents, which can enhance or diminish your healing capabilities. If you have a preferred support champion, understand how their abilities work, and then select the talent that best keeps your team alive.

2. Keep a Safe Distance

There’s generally no need for you to push up the middle with your team unless you have a well-thought-out plan involving your ultimate. In about 90% of situations, aim to stay hidden while providing healing to your team. Avoid exposing yourself too much to potential threats.

3. You’re a Valued Team Member

While your focus is on healing your team, don’t forget to prioritize your well-being as a support. It’s essential to consider your teammates, but if you find yourself in a perilous situation, such as being flanked, use your movement ability to retreat. Seek help from a teammate if possible, or if no one is nearby, escape from the flank at all costs. Your survival is crucial, and in scenarios where teammates may complain about lacking healing, remember that defending yourself is perfectly valid.

Conclusion

These are three straightforward tips for each class, and there’s certainly more to delve into as you gain more knowledge of the game. Consider these as a foundation, and as you become more experienced, you can explore additional strategies and nuances.

If you have any feedback, feel free to share it in the comments. Additionally, if you have your own tips, don’t hesitate to contribute. Your insights might be valuable, and I’ll be open to considering them as well.
