Konami has re-released Bluepoint’s work on the 7th Gen HD Collection and made some improvements. However, they’ve left it at 720p on PC in 2023, which is quite baffling.

Thankfully, it only took a few hours for a modder to step in and provide a fix. I’m sure even better ones will keep coming. It seems like this is one of those situations where you buy the game and then rely on mods to make it better. The added extras are pretty cool, but many players would prefer to see improvements in the core games. So, it’s time to fix the game!

How to Unlock Resolution

First, you need to download MGSResolutionPatch from this Github project:

  • MGSResolutionPatch

This here is an experimental ASI Plugin designed for the Steam versions of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3. It’s got a nifty feature that lets you change the in-game resolution via an ini config file.

For those diving into MGS 3, it’s recommended for resolutions like 1920×1080 and 3840×2160. While this plugin plays nice with MGS 2, beware that cranking up the resolution might introduce some funky bugs to the user interface. As for other resolutions, well, they’re not guaranteed to look just right (they might get all stretched out), but you can give them a shot if you’re feeling adventurous.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Grab the latest Ultimate ASI Loader from this link.
  2. Toss that d3d11.dll from the Ultimate ASI Loader into your MGS2/MGS3 directory.
  3. Next, snag the latest MGSResolutionPatch from this link.
  4. Place MGSResolutionPatch.asi and MGSResolutionPatch.ini into your MGS2/MGS3 directory.
  5. Open up MGSResolutionPatch.ini with a text editor to tweak the resolution to your liking.

Just a heads-up, be ready for potential UI weirdness in MGS2 for now. All the credit goes to Sergeanur, and there’s even an issues page for the project on Github if you need help or have feedback.
