This guide will show you some of the most useful and advanced tips and tricks that you should know if you’re planning to use the great sword in Monster Hunter: Mundo. Indudablemente, the great sword is one of the weapons that offers the most devastating damage in the game. Mastering this weapon will surely enhance your success rate when defeating monsters in the game.
Great Sword Combos
I won’t get into all the small details about how to use the Great Sword. If you haven’t figured that out yet, I suggest watching a couple of these videos:
- Mira el Great Sword Tutorial y el Iceborne follow-up by Arekkz.
- consigue algo Advanced Great Sword tips from Im a Giraffe.
I’ve also discussed the duration of different combos in my video, which you can find aquí.
Charge Mechanics
The Great Sword has three primary attacks: the Draw Slash, Strong Charge, and True Charged Slash (TCS). Each of these attacks has three levels, but you can overcharge them. Overcharging downgrades the damage to level 2. Normalmente, investing in a level 1 TCS isn’t worth the buildup.
TCS Mechanics
The True Charge Slash (TCS) of the Great Sword has various modifiers that can enhance its damage. One notable modifier is TCS (Fuerza), indicated by both the hunter and weapon glowing red. This boosts raw damage by approximately 25%. To activate this boost, you need to land the first slash of the TCS on a hitzone value of ≥45. Areas like Fatal‘ cabeza, pecho, and forearms (also tenderized backlegs) have this value. It’s important to note that hitting the neck won’t trigger TCS (Fuerza), even if it shows orange numbers upon impact.
The GIF below illustrates the visual difference between the normal and Power versions. Keep in mind that both the first and second hits cause hitlag when striking a good hitzone, which is crucial for certain tight openings.
Draw Slash
The Draw Slash, also known as the Overhead Slash or Charged Slash, depends on whether your weapon is sheathed or not. Por simplicidad, I’ll refer to both as the Draw Slash.
Draw Slashes are useful for small openings or as part of the Full Combo. You can execute draw attacks more quickly by rolling first and then performing the draw slash (avoid spamming the slash to maintain speed). This technique is effective for closing distance swiftly and initiating combos sooner in tight situations.

- xbox: Y
- Estación de juegos: Triángulo
- METRO&k: Botón del mouse izquierdo (LM)
Strong Charge Combo
The Strong Charge Slash serves as the second slash in the full combo. Por simplicidad, I’ll use Strong Charge to describe when both a Draw Slash and a Strong Charged Slash are used consecutively.
The Strong Charge Combo is effective for medium openings and involves a Draw Slash followed by a level 1-3 Strong Charge (Barra oblicua). Alternativamente, for slightly tighter openings, el nivel 3 Draw Slash can be used.

- xbox: Y -> Palo izquierdo (any direction) + Y (sostener)
- Estación de juegos: Triangle -> Palo izquierdo (any direction) + Triángulo (sostener)
- METRO&k: Botón del mouse izquierdo (LM) -> W. + LM (sostener)
Combinación completa
The Full Combo comprises a level 1 Draw Slash, un nivel 1 Strong Charge, and a level 2-3 True Charged Slash (TCS). It’s particularly effective for large openings such as Triple Charge Fireballs, knockdowns, and binders.
Aporte:
- xbox: Y -> Palo izquierdo (any direction) + Y -> Palo izquierdo (any direction) + Y
- Estación de juegos: Triangle -> Palo izquierdo (any direction) + Triangle -> Palo izquierdo (any direction) + Triángulo
- METRO&k: Botón del mouse izquierdo (LM) -> W. + LM -> W. + LM
Full Charge Combo
The Full Charge Combo, como sugiere el nombre, is identical to the Full Combo but with all attacks at level 3 cargos. Primarily utilized for knockdowns.
Aporte:
- Same as Full Combo, but you hold each attack longer to charge.
Slinger TCS
The Slinger TCS is a quick version of the TCS suitable for medium to large openings, allowing you to face any direction. It’s versatile and useful for various situations, such as dealing with the Cone attack, Roars, and Smoke Bombs.
Note that using this move requires slinger ammo, so it’s advisable to carry Dung Pods in case no slinger ammo is available. Remember to turn off the auto shoutout for this move.
Side Blow Trick
The Side Blow Trick is performed after a tackle and is beneficial for both creating openings and enhancing survival. It enables the use of Slinger Burst, theoretically allowing for an infinite TCS combo. Integrating the Side Blow into the Full Combo allows for a second TCS, useful for actions like knockdowns or punishing P3 Nova.
To execute the Side Blow after a tackle:
- xbox: RT + Y
- Estación de juegos: R2 + Triángulo
- METRO&k: Rueda de desplazamiento + LM
After the Side Blow, you can follow up with Slinger Burst and a TCS.
Escape Combo Input:
- xbox: B -> Y -> RT + Y -> Repeat everything
- Estación de juegos: Circle -> Triangle -> R2 + Triangle -> Repeat everything
- METRO&k: Space -> LM -> Rueda de desplazamiento + LM -> Repeat everything
