How to catch a Ghost fish, step by step.

Intro

GhostCatch a Ghost in Realism mode.

This hidden achievement was added some time ago and there is still no guide on how to get it.

It is also the rarest one in the game so far (with 0.3% completion rate).

How to catch a Ghost in Realism mode?

So here you go, step by step:

  • Step 1 – Extinct Torby
  • Step 2 – Get a thunderstorm
  • Step 3 – Buy a Hook
  • Step 4 – Wait for the Torby’s ghost
  • Step 5 – Catch a bait fish
  • Step 6 – Catch a Ghost

The following sections describe all of the steps in detail.

Use the guide structure to navigate between them.

Step 1 – Torby extinction

Catch and sell both Torby

Torby is a large white and yellow fish, usually found in the deep water just before the Coral Basin.

A Ghost fish is a skeleton variation of Torby after their extinction. It looks like a skeleton fish in the water and like a Torby on your sonar, also like a Torby in the light of lightning flashes.

To make a ghost spawn possible, you first need to catch both Torby in one save file. So make them extinct. By doing this, you will also get the “Oops” achievement (Cause the extinction of a species).

Step 2 – Thunderstorm

You need stormy weather

The Ghost only appears during a storm at night in the game.

A thunderstorm is when lightning flashes and thunder occurs, all fish look like x-ray skeletons for brief moments. However, don’t be fooled, they are still not a Ghost.

This is a rather rare event. If you have an occasional thunderstorm, use it for your ghost hunting.

If not, you can make it more frequent by wearing the Nightfall hat: exactly, the last 15 minutes of every hour will be stormy (your local time).

And you don’t have to wait for it in the game, you can start at any hh:45.

Step 3 – Prepare for the ghost hunt

[Optional] Noctis

You might want to get rid of the annoying Noctis fish. It’s a huge fast fish and will interrupt you all the time. So it will be better to catch this one out if you got it swimming around.

[Optional] Lightbulb

You can buy lights if you like. Or use your sonar instead. Both work well for this. Up to you.

I prefer buying a Lightbulb once –

with the Battery Pack hat put on, light’s lifetime is half an hour instead of the usual 3 minutes – and then change to the Nightfall hat and start the ghost hunt.

Huge Hook

A Ghost is a large fish – it needs a medium fish as a bait.

But it doesn’t spawn in case if you already have a large bait on the line during the cast. And also it disappears on recast.

So a Huge Hook is required.

Step 4 – Wait for the moment to cast

Transparent Torby

Wait in your boat for a series of lightning flashes.

Start casting your line and see if a transparent Torby shows up flying behind the cat. It can appear only in the light of lightning, however, not with every flash.

If it doesn’t appear behind you, wait, don’t let your Huge Hook went wasted to the water.

To make a Ghost fish spawn you need to cast exactly when the Torby “ghost” shows.

Small bait

And don’t forget that you need a small bait on your rod when casting, not a large one!

(for me a medium bait didn’t work either, but you can try and let me know in the comments)

If you have synchronized the cast with the transparent Torby, a Ghost fish will appear in the water near your boat.

Step 5 – Catch a medium fish

Do you see the Ghost?

If you succeeded and the Ghost spawns, you will see that the skeleton-looking fish immediately began to chase your rod and try to steal your bait. However, don’t let that happen just yet.

Don’t worry, it won’t run away as long as your bait is in the water. It will follow your hook everywhere. Luckily, this fish is not too fast.

But if the Ghost steals a small / medium bait, it will disappear from the water and you will need to go back to the prepare and wait steps again.

Catch the bait fish first

Catch a small fish while avoiding the Ghost,

then a medium fish,

and then the Ghost – all without recasting.

This is where the Flick upgrade comes in handy.

Step 6 – You caught the Ghost

Congratulations!

Once on your rod, the Ghost fish won’t fight back. You caught it.

You just got:

  • an Exotic fish for your Catalog
  • $100,000
  • the “Ghost” achievement!
