Here’s a short guide that talks about some stuff in BIT.TRIP RERUNNER that you might not know about. This is useful when you’re playing tough custom levels or trying to get higher scores in the regular game. The guide will explain things to you and give you a better idea of what’s going on in the game. It’s all about mechanics, which means how things work in the game, and this knowledge can help you do better in tricky levels and get higher scores in the regular game.

Overview

RERUNNER might seem simple, but there’s more to it than meets the eye. It goes beyond basic actions, and some custom levels need you to be creative to beat them. You can also achieve things that the game doesn’t explain through unique scoring mechanics.

I learned these tricks from the community and the game developers. I want to share what I know, so this guide will list and introduce many ways you can use CommanderVideo’s basic moves to your advantage.

Perfect Block/Parry

I really enjoy this mechanic because it feels a lot like a rhythm game. When you lift your paddle just before hitting a BEAT block, you’ll hear a more satisfying sound, and your paddle gets an extra neon green effect, showing you did a perfect parry.

The perfect timing for this is about 90 milliseconds or around 5 frames before you touch the block. Doing this gives you a 10% score boost, which is the same as a single dance move. This makes it super handy for getting high scores because there’s no delay between blocking and your next move.

Kick Cancels

If you block or absorb while in the middle of your kick animation, it stops the kick, and you can act freely and way faster than waiting for the kick to finish.

This trick is not used often in custom levels, but it’s handy to kick obstacles apart from each other when they’re spaced awkwardly. It can also let you do more dancing in levels that wouldn’t be possible without kick canceling and helps you blast CORE beats earlier than the level suggests.

Sliding While Springing

There’s no official name for this yet, but it’s like sliding onto trampolines. You can keep sliding while springing up as long as you hold Down when you press Up. If you release Down while in mid-air, you can’t slide again. It’s sometimes necessary in tough custom levels, but it doesn’t have other benefits, and you might miss gold in high spots.

This is easier for keyboard players but quite tricky for controller players because most of the game uses the directional pad. I suggest assigning your right stick to all the directional pad actions for an easier time with actions that need overlapping inputs.

Kicks Maintaining After Sliding

In the game, you can notice that the duration of your kick doesn’t stop when you jump or slide, which isn’t often used in custom level design. This feature can make it easier to handle tricky patterns that would otherwise demand quick input and precision.

Kicking Gold Bars

In Runner3, you earn just one point each time you kick a gold bar. This doesn’t change based on your difficulty or mode multiplier; it’s always just 1 point per kick. If you ever notice your score seeming unusual or higher than expected, this is the reason why.

It might not be very practical, but it’s a quirky addition by the developers. Who knows, it could become more useful as leaderboard scores get more competitive in the future.
