This guide will show you how to deal with the Shadow Curse in Baldur’s Gate 3 during Act 2. If you’re one of those players who are stuck because of this, then reading this guide will surely help you a lot.

Bringing Out the Light

When you first go to the Shadow-Cursed Lands, make sure you bring Light with you. You can use a torch in your off-hand weapon slot, cast the Light spell cantrip on equipment, use Produce Flame, or wield a glowing Mace. Just ensure your group is well lit because the curse affects everyone except Shadowheart.

Using the Light cantrip or Produce Flame is the easier option, as it saves you from carrying a torch. Staying within the range of a light source is also sufficient.

It’s not necessary for everyone in the party to carry a light source, as long as you all stick close together.

Fighting the Shadows

In the Shadow-Cursed Lands, you’ll come across enemies that become invisible in darkness. Dealing with them can be challenging. To handle this, keep your light source close. When you pull these enemies into the light, they become much easier to deal with and pose little to no problem.

Freeing Dolly Dolly Dolly

At some point, you’ll encounter a lantern-carrier in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, and they are hard to overlook. Make sure to take possession of the lantern as soon as possible to make your journey easier.

If you release the imprisoned pixie named Dolly Dolly Dolly, she will give you her blessing. This blessing makes you immune to the Shadow Curse. Additionally, she’ll give you a bell that lets you reapply her blessing whenever needed. This is especially helpful if you decide to go back to the Wilderness, as the blessing wears off when traveling to a different area.

Choosing to help Dolly Dolly Dolly is a wise decision, making your journey in the Shadow-Cursed Lands much easier. However, if you opt not to free her and use the lantern as is, be cautious. Using it as a weapon can be fatal for her.

If you encounter any issues, it’s important to troubleshoot. Some players might confuse Dolly Dolly Dolly’s cries for help with Mol, so pay attention to avoid any misunderstandings.

The conversation with Dolly Dolly Dolly should start automatically when you first loot the lantern. If it doesn’t, try giving the lantern to another character and have them equip it as a weapon. This will add the “Inspect Moonlantern” action to your hotbar, allowing you to manually trigger the dialogue and ensure you don’t miss out on the interaction.

Oliver Encounter

In the middle of the destroyed battlefield, you’ll encounter Oliver. He’s a curious child. Making him happy is easy, and he plays a crucial role in getting rid of the Shadow Curse.

During a game of hide and seek with him, his initial hiding spot is beside the cart.

For the second round, ensure that you remain concealed throughout, allowing you to approach him without being noticed. He’ll return to his initial spot.

Playing hide and seek becomes simpler when you can see through invisibility. Stay hidden and get close to Oliver without the Shadows detecting you. Afterward, right-click on him and select the option to talk.

Lift the Curse

To lift the curse, having Halsin by your side is essential. At the Last Light Inn, you’ll encounter Art Cullagh, a survivor of the Shadow Curse. Retrieve his lute from the House of Healing to wake him up.

Following his conversation with Halsin, a portal will be opened by him to rescue Thaniel, the Spirit of the Land.

Guard the portal from the approaching Shadows to ensure a safe passage.

For optimal strategies in this situation, it’s best to conceal the portal and quickly attack the approaching rangers. Maintain the line with the Spirit Guardian.

Additionally, employing a freezing technique in the area can be effective, causing the incoming enemies to repeatedly fall prone.

Oliver and Thaniel Encounter

It appears that Oliver is a crucial component of Thaniel. To break the curse, it’s vital to reunite them. Initially, Oliver will trust you and attempt to escape.

Pursue him through the portal and confront his Shadow guardians.

Defeat them to proceed.

It’s ideal to have Halsin with you, as he can easily persuade Oliver to reunite with his other half after the battle. Subsequently, you’ll discover Thaniel, now complete with Oliver, at your camp, as long as you stay within the Act 2 area.

Removal of the Shadow Curse

With Thaniel, the Spirit of the Land, now whole, and Ketheric Thorm, the bearer of Shar’s power, defeated, the Shadow-Cursed Lands will gradually heal. The complete removal of the Shadow Curse might not be evident during your adventure in the area, but you can depart knowing that you have permanently ended a centuries-long curse.
