A brief and probably bad guide to Arma 3’s vanilla camouflage and Sniping as a role. This covers how to effectively camouflage yourself, how to proceed when being spotted whilst camouflaged and general sniping situations.

Introduction

This guide aims to show how camouflaged you can be in Arma 3. This can be playing as a sniper role, general rifleman or any role than requires a basic level of camouflage. I will be covering this with all vanilla rifles, clothing and any mods that may be of advantage to a player without any mods.

I am nowhere near experienced enough at this in real life, but i have a general understanding of Arma 3. So I apologise if some of this may be incorrect.

General Camouflage and A Sniper’s Role

General Camouflage

In this image, a NATO Sniper (Arid) is shown surveying the valley below. Usually the surveying task is given to a partnering Spotter, but in some cases there may be exceptions. Be aware of using the suitable Ghillie Suit for the terrain ahead. In this case, the Arid Ghillie suit fits well, but a Semi-Arid suit may be better.

A Sniper’s Role

Usually, a Sniper would be placed in a location far from their target. But sometimes their specific mission may require a different level of camouflage. In appose to the usual Ghillie suit grass cover, sometimes being posted up in a ruined building may help depending on the angle. These buildings provide cover if the Sniper and Spotter duo had their position compromised.

Effective Range Variations

Snipers have the upper hand when operating at greater distances. Using the ruined building example, general riflemen and marksmen may not be able to engage as effectively as a Sniper would in this situation.

Where a team like this may be able to lay down much more suppressive fire, their effectiveness may be limited due to their range. A Building such as this much better suits their range.

Choosing the correct camouflage

There are 6 different NATO sniper variations in Arma 3.

These are; Sniper, Arid, Lush, Semi-Arid, Sniper (Apex) and Jungle. The ones from the Apex DLC (Sniper and Jungle) better suit the Tanoan terrain rather than Altis’.
