The animated forest is surely the game’s most tightly packed level. That can make for very slow going in a high corruption zone. But there’s a few ways you can crack this nut.
Why go past the Animated Forest?
Progressing very far with Thrundarr’s lucrative quest sequence requires you to
“go beyond da Animated Forest”.That aside, any kind of ending will require you to eventually venture deeper in the Caverns of Chaos beyond this awkward level.

1. Bypass the Forest level altogether
This can be dome by braving the parallel Dwarven Hall levels. However this is very dangerous as many out-of-depth monsters are generated here. You’re probably better off not risking this, unless you’ve got some special advantages (e.g. invisibility, magic mapping, controlled teleportation).
2. Walk through Forest as calmly as you can
This is a feasible strategy since most of the trees are non-hostile. But requires a lot of patience waiting on them all to get out of the way. Wielding two shields is a smart tactic here to ensure you don’t provoke any trees by accident.
However, inevitably you
willencounter hostile trees, and these will be very hard to kill since you’ll incur melee penalties from being surrounded. But whatever you do – DO NOT resort to any kind of fire attacks since this will turn all the trees on this level hostile towards you!
3. Tunnel around the Forest
Beyond the East and North walls is just enough solid rock to carve a tunnel though. You could use a just pickaxe for this, but a Blessed Wand of Digging is much quicker and can do the job with 5 or 6 blasts. If you don’t have one of these already, consider completing Thundar’s Portal Quest first, which grants you a Wand of Digging as one of the rewards.
Other useful gear to pack includes:
– Pickaxe for any short tunnel sections
– Potions of booze (for re-charging wands)
– Scrolls of Charging (ditto)
– A wand of Door Creation to plug up the exits to your tunnel
– A good collection of keys to lock up these doors behind you
Note: Trees will eventually spawn within your locked tunnel, and you’ll need to combat some of these on you way back to Dwarf Town later. However they’ll fall much easier in your tunnel now where you cannot be surrounded.
