Overview
Before diving deep, it’s smart to join a Sect early on. This usually happens right after bumping into your first bunch of bandits – they’re like a welcome committee, but with swords.
Starting off as a Disciple is key for leveling up and unlocking various Skills and Inner Kungfu techniques. Without them, you’re pretty much teaching empty air. And hey, if you dream of having your own squad of warriors, having a training school is a solid move, especially if you want them to hold their own in a brawl.
But hey, don’t expect to go far without some buddies or without honing your non-fighting talents. They’re kind of crucial for, you know, life.
Prerequisites (Abilities and Where to Find them)
Learning Abilities
If you’re feeling a bit lost in the system or can’t seem to crack open the Build tab (that’s ‘H’ for shortcut aficionados), fret not! Here’s the lowdown on how you can scoop up most Abilities, especially the crafty, item-related ones, in the game:
In this game, NPCs come packing their own unique knowledge sets. If you cozy up to them a bit (you know, doing quests, tossing them gifts, throwing out compliments, or yakking about stuff they’re into), they might just spill some of their wisdom.
Their expertise usually matches their gig. Like, don’t expect just anyone on the street to know Leechcraft, but folks at the Clinic? Oh yeah, they’re your go-to for that.
Quick reminder: When you want to scoop up some new smarts, hit ‘Request’ then ‘Learn.’ If you’re feeling generous and want to spread the knowledge wealth, it’s ‘Assist’ then ‘Teach.’
Getting Started
To finally plant your Party Flag, it’ll cost you 5,000 coins. Once placed, it claims the entire Lot you’re on.
Expect some Roamers to join you soon after, but having a few friends or establishing yourself in a City Lot can ease the transition into Sect life.
The most crucial structure for your Sect is the Warehouse. Without it, your Disciples won’t have a place to deliver their taxes (resources and coin). However, unlocking it is a bit complex, as it requires various skills:
- Hanger – Weave: Expert: Make cheap clothes using a Clothing Store’s Loom.
- Weapon Shelf – Forge: Expert: Craft wood concealed weapons using a Smithy’s Furnace.
- Potion Shelf – Leechcraft: Expert: Create Astringent using a Clinic’s crucible.
- Contraption Shelf – Crafting: Expert: Gain naturally by crafting items in the B menu.
- Wine Shelf – Wine Art: Expert: Level up by visiting a tavern, sitting at the bar, and choosing the “Drink: Luxury Wine” option. Just watch out for blacking out!
What Are You Missing?
If you encounter a UI error while using the Build tab and can’t place a building, try hovering your mouse over the building multiple times until the “Crafting Locked” tooltip appears. This tooltip will indicate what knowledge you’re missing to construct that structure.
For instance, if you’re unable to build a Fabric Shop because it requires the Loom, check your Produce (Craft) tab in your bag. You’ll likely need to train your Weaving skill to the Veteran level to unlock it.
Establishments (Buildings)
The beauty of Matchless Kungfu lies in the freedom to hand-craft your own houses, without a current system for maintaining happiness through housing quality. Whether it’s bamboo and straw shelters or more elaborate structures, your Disciples will be content.
While the Warehouse is crucial for gathering resources, expanding your options is wise. Prioritize building a Clinic, Shops, and a Jail early on if you lack them.
Here’s a breakdown of Buildings and their Uses:
- Residence – House: Provides a home for your Disciples.
- Village – Production: Farmland for growing herbs/crops.
- Coward Hut – ???
- Hunter – Production: Gathers animal resources (excluding fish).
- Fisherman – Production: Catches fish.
- Mining Hut – Production: Extracts stone chunks and ores.
- Peripheral – Not a building: Allows mass placement of Craft menu items without using the Craft/Bag menus.
- Spring – Shop: Healing area that cleanses meridians.
- Fabric Shop – Shop: Produces and sells Gear (clothing).
- Smithy – Shop: Produces and sells Gear (weapons).
- Langya Pavilion – Shop: Produces and sells Contraptions (traps/furniture).
- Tavern – Facility: Gathering place for drinking and socializing.
- Hall – ???
- Warehouse – Sect: Collects taxes and resources from Disciples.
- Jail – Facility: Imprisons wanted/rulebreakers with the Jail rule set.
- Training Room – Facility: Disciples train here when assigned to a Kungfu School.
- Music Hall – Facility: Gathering place for music performances.
- City Guardian Temple – Facility: Offers temporary weather changes and facilitates childbirth (with an Intimate partner) for a fee.
- Clinic – Shop/Facility: Produces medicines and treats meridian ailments for a fee.
The Sect Tab (& Collection)
This area allows you to access and configure various fundamental functions for your Sect, such as custom Rules and establishing Schools of Kungfu (more details provided later in the guide).
Moreover, it furnishes valuable insights into your Sect, particularly in the Lot Taxes column. Here, you’ll find information about the availability of different types of resources (hover over for specific item details), which will be delivered to the Warehouse every few days along with any taxes collected.
Taxation & Resource Collection
Every three in-game days, your Disciples will contribute to the Sect’s finances and supplies based on the Lot Taxes.
Hovering over each resource type will provide more details; for example, Wood will display “100 Wood, 50 Maple Bark, 50 Pinecones”.
The items will be delivered to their corresponding storage container type; for instance, Wood will be placed in the Grocery Cabinet.
Additionally, Disciples may occasionally provide extra or spare goods autonomously. For instance, Clinic pharmacists might deliver remedies like Astringent or Anti-poison Plaster to the Potion Shelf. The proficiency of the worker determines the quality of the items they produce and deliver.
Kungfu Schools
One enjoyable aspect of Sects is the opportunity to transform a group of peasants into self-reliant warriors.
Schools enable you to impart the knowledge you’ve amassed to your Disciples, facilitating faster and more efficient teaching compared to manually transcribing manuals at a Bookshelf (although that’s beneficial too!) or individually gifting them.
For instance, consider my Monkey Fist school.
It’s relatively straightforward but adheres to effective combat principles: it focuses on one damage type (Fist) along with its counter (Fists are vulnerable to Swords, while Kick counters Swords), supplemented by Inner Kungfu (providing a Bionic damage boost and enhancing vigor/health).
This system encourages experimentation; the more Kungfu you master, the greater the potential for your Disciples’ growth!
Sect Rules
What Sect would be complete without a code of conduct to follow? While currently somewhat limited, you have various options for defining the overall ethos your Sect should uphold.
This primarily boils down to Entry Requirements and Taboos.
Entry Requirements dictate what a prospective Disciple must fulfill to apply to your Sect. These can range from gender-specific criteria, like only admitting women or men, to requiring a certain Reputation (such as Merciful, indicating they’ve spared opponents in combat), or even existing Abilities, like proficiency in Qinggong (sprinting), Leechcraft, or Begging.
Taboos are restricted to a maximum of four and pertain to actions that constitute a crime against the Sect. These include Negative Attitude (expressing hatred toward a Disciple), Filthy Thief (stealing from a Disciple’s property), Traitor of the Sect (attacking a Disciple), and Brutal Killer (murdering a Disciple).
Punishments can be adjusted according to personal preference. Options include imposing fines (up to 9,999 coins), temporary detention (for up to 3 days), depriving the offender of their Kungfu (which may foster resentment), or executing the ultimate penalty, “Death is insufficient for the Crime” (decapitation).
Assigning Jobs
Manage Disciples
Within this tab, you have access to your complete roster of Disciples (Shifu), along with the following options:
- Sect Position
- Expulsion
- Workplace/type
- Work-relevant Ability level/training
- Kungfu School
- Kungfu Skill level/training
Clicking on these tabs will reveal contextual menus, enabling you to assign Disciples to various roles.
Here’s a brief overview of assigning a new Training Room instructor:
Position & Prestige
Disciples must receive varying levels of pay based on their Position, with Outdoor positions earning 300 coins, Indoor positions receiving 500 coins, and Elders being compensated with 1,000 coins. The specific duties associated with each Position are still under consideration, but they may potentially influence the morale and reputation of lower-ranking Disciples, potentially boosting their Prestige.
Prestige is tied to Succession within the Sect. It represents the numerical value that increases as you complete quests or perform commendable actions for the Sect, thereby pleasing its leader. Upon the demise of the current Master (you), the member with the highest Prestige within the Sect will ascend to the role of Master.
Issue Orders
Distinct from the Release Commissions tab, the Issue Orders function empowers you to direct your Retainers and Shifu (Disciples). You have the authority to manually designate a Tax Collector or instruct specific Disciples to undertake construction tasks, sparing you the hassle of resource collection.
Furthermore, you can enforce your Sect’s justice system by handpicking an individual for “Execute Rules,” specifying a custom punishment (such as paying fines, detention, or execution), and assigning a Retainer or Disciple to execute the sentence.
Here’s a demonstration of its most valuable feature: directing multiple Disciples to complete a building project:
Expanding Territory
- Press R to open your Tasks menu
- Click on the Sect tab
- Click Expand Territory in the Lot Taxes column
The flashing white Lots indicate areas where you can expand, always adjacent to your existing territory, including corners.
Hovering over any flashing Lot reveals details of its available resources, which your Disciples can gather into your Warehouse.
To expand to a new Lot, you must dispatch up to five Disciples and pay a fee. This fee is deducted from the coins in your Warehouse, requiring manual replenishment if necessary.
Once initiated, you can check the Map to see the time remaining until expansion completion by hovering over the Lot. Expansion duration appears to vary based on the number of Disciples sent and potentially the resource richness of the Lot. For example, deploying five Disciples yields a completion time of approximately 300 seconds (5 minutes), whereas sending a single Disciple may result in a timer close to 600 seconds (10 minutes).
You can simultaneously expand to multiple Lots, but only to those currently inhabited, and only if you have spare Disciples available.
Dueling for Territory
Established Lots such as villages, cities, and other Sects can be incorporated into your territory, but they won’t relinquish their turf without resistance!
In these Duels, you’re limited to the five Disciples you choose; Team Up companions cannot participate. Therefore, your selected Disciples must be well-trained, as they’ll face formidable opponents determined to defend their claim.
