Possible solution to a Unity crash on startup issue
Unity’s ‘common’ issue.
I’ve failed multiple times while trying to launch the game, getting a black screen and then a flicker of a ‘Unity has crashed’ popup, or even getting a black screen with the game’s cursor for several seconds (making me think it would work) and have had a lot of trouble finding a solution. It seems Unity has a fairly ‘common’ issue, which from my understanding is from Unity itself and not something a particular developper can fix.
When Unity tries to launch a game that has different resolution settings to the computer’s it can cause an immediate error, about being unable to change resolutions. This error seems to be related to a computer’s ‘scaling’ settings for screen resolution, and turning off said scaling settings should fix the issue (I can’t guarantee this, but it did for me, so feedback would be appreciated).
Windows 10 Internal Display solution
This is the solution I found worked for Windows 10 (for other versions presumably there will be some similarities)
- Open the start menu (Chave do Windows).
- Clique Configurações (The gear Icon in the bottom left just above the power icon).
- Clique Sistema.
- This should automatically put you in the Mostrar seção, if not click Mostrar on the left hand menu.
- About half way down the options there should be a Scale and Layout section which should include Change the size of text, apps and other items (essentially a zoom) as well as resolution and display orientation.
- Below the size change option there should be a blue text Advanced scaling settings, clique nisso.
- At the very top of the page there should be Fix scaling for apps with a toggle, this should be turned off.
Opcional:
Verificar Windows Updater for driver updates.
- Open the start menu (Chave do Windows).
- Clique Verifique se há atualizações (The gear Icon in the bottom left just above the power icon).
- Clique Verifique se há atualizações.
- Click the grey box with Verifique se há atualizações (perto do topo, a little left of centre).
- Wait for the check to finish, and any updates to download.
- Restart and install updates.
OpcionalManually check if your driver is up to date (significantly more complicated and I’m not going to give a guide for this).
Nvidia
This I can’t verify due to windows/Nvidia issues, but I will give what steps I can if someone wants to verify them themself:
- Open Nvidia Control Panel
- Open start menu (Windows key) or search.
- Start typing Painel de controle Nvidia.
- Clique em Painel de controle Nvidia when you get the result.
- In the directory on the left there should be a series of categories (if you only have 3D Configurações the control panel has an issue and you might not be able to complete these steps).
- Selecione 3D Configurações.
- Selecione Gerencie as configurações 3D.
- Selecione Configurações globais (Optionally you can select Program Settings and tune controls for each program).
- Brows the list of Configurações para Image Scaling (this should be near the top).
- Selecione Image Scaling.
- Turn off scaling.
If you have the earlier-mentioned issue of only having the 3D Configurações category and do not have an Image Scaling setting there are some options you can try, but none of these can be guaranteed:
- Reset Nvidia. (Recommended to copy these instructions or open them on another device, will require two restarts, my understanding of computer drivers isn’t the best so there may be issues).
- Open start menu (Windows key) or search.
- Procurar Device Manager.
- Abrir Device Manager.
- Clique em Display adaptors (should be about 1/3rd of the way down the list).
- Right Click on your Nvidia driver to bring up the drop down menu.
- Clique Disable device.
- Reinicie seu computador.
- Repeat all earlier steps, except this time select Enable device (again followed by restarting your computer).
- Try accessing Painel de controle Nvidia de novo.
- Try updating Nvidia drivers via Geforce.
- Open start menu (Windows key) or search.
- Procurar Nvidia GeForce.
- Abrir Nvidia GeForce.
- Clique em Drivers (canto superior esquerdo).
- Clique em Check for Updates (canto superior direito).
- If there is a driver update click Download, if not your drivers may be up to date and unable to help.
- Once the driver has finished downloading, click the install option you find preferable.
- Opcional: Reinicie seu computador
- Attempt to change the scaling settings again.
- Semi-manually Update your driver using Nvidia’s downloadable installer, This can be a complicated process and I’m not going to go into it due to lack of skills and risks involved, but there are multiple dedicated guides on the internet for this.
