Having trouble making the submarines go down? I have a way of attacking them that works pretty well. If I do it just right, I can make the submarines sink about 7 times out of 10 on the first try. Let me explain how I do it!

Preparing for the Attack

  • Put the speed at Full and leave it there.
  • Adjust TRR to 16 (look at the scale in the upper left). Since we’re attacking the sub from the same angle with constant speeds, no need to change TRR.
  • Set the DRT to the 100 yards range.
  • Choose shallow and a tight pattern for the depth charges.

Closing In

When your radar or sonar detects a contact, head straight toward it. If it’s a radar contact, point the sonar with a narrow search pattern at it. Even though you don’t need it right now, having the sonar set properly will help you pick up the sub faster when it dives. Use the guns to shoot at the sub and make it dive quickly, keeping it away from the convoy because a submerged sub is much slower than on the surface.

Approach the sub, following it on the DRT. Control the attack run until the very final moments when you’re about 2000 yards away. Change your course from the sub, and for simplicity on the DRT, choose 000°, 090°, 180°, or 270°. Check the depth settings at the bottom right of the TRR frequently and adjust the depth charge settings if needed. Use shallow for 10 segundos, medium for 30 segundos, and deep for 50 segundos.

Pass the sub and drive past it, making sure you have enough room to maneuver for your destroyer. Avoid closing in from a high deflective angle on the direction path of the sub. Maneuver on the sub’s 6 o’clock, as attacks are always made from the sub’s stern. Use the DRT for rough maneuvering in 90° steps and then adjust it finer for a smooth 6 o’clock approach. Practice several times to learn how much room and time the destroyer needs to turn.

Final Attack Run

Agora, you should be nicely behind the sub and closing in fast. In the final approach within a few hundred yards, switch to the DSC projector and head directly at the sub. Align the bow with the sonar beam and keep it there. Many subs try to evade, so if you see the sonar beam wandering off the bow in steps, add 15° rudder to the direction the sonar beam is turning. This usually keeps up nicely with the sub.

When you lose sonar contact with the sub, keep the rudder as it is and wait for 5 seconds before firing the depth charges. Don’t fire too early because the sub is also moving, and timing is crucial.

Detect Sub Again and Prepare the 2nd Run

Allow 15 more seconds to pass, then turn back into the direction you came from for the attack. De novo, I usually choose the closest 90° increment. Immediately set the sonar to the wider search pattern and align it on the side of your destroyer where the sub is. Set the direction of the scanning so that it moves from your stern to your bow. In my screenshot of the DRT, I set the course to the south, set the sonar search from 000° to 180° on the eastern side, and have the beam search clockwise, starting at 000°. If the sub survives the first attack, it will almost certainly be caught again by the sonar.

If the first attack wasn’t successful, start over and follow the procedure again. Patience and careful adjustments are key to a successful attack on the submarine.
