There are two reasons why you might be here:
- You’ve just begun playing Returnal and want to get ready for the Achievements.
- You’ve already played Returnal and are curious about how the Ciphers function or where to find the ones you haven’t collected.
If you fall into the first category, you’re in good shape! Being prepared is essential for an easier time collecting the ciphers.

How Ciphers Work
The game has a predetermined number of ciphers in each biome. If you want to avoid spoilers, be cautious while scrolling through the guide, as it reveals the biomes in the game.
Every biome comprises various rooms that may spawn differently during a playthrough. The ciphers are specifically placed within these rooms. Once you’ve found a cipher in a particular room, there won’t be another one in that same room. This is why those preparing to collect ciphers have an advantage. By keeping track of the rooms where you’ve found ciphers, you can effectively “ignore” those rooms in future runs. Remembering each room where you’ve collected a cipher is a significant advantage.
