The central adversaries in the World War Z franchise are the zombies, which are reanimated corpses of deceased humans. These creatures are characterized by their extreme violence, as they relentlessly pursue and attack any living beings with the intent to consume, doden, and infect.

The World War Z video game draws its inspiration primarily from the film adaptation and portrays zombies as agile runners sharing physical traits such as darkened veins and clouded eyes. They demonstrate distinctive behaviors, including heightened aggression, an affinity for loud noises, and the ability to swiftly surmount obstacles.

The transformation of newly infected individuals into zombies occurs rapidly, typically within 12 seconds or less, accompanied by uncontrollable convulsions. Interessant genoeg, some zombies exhibit hints of self-preservation, such as evading oncoming threats by leaping out of harm’s way when a survivor takes aim at them.

Gameplay reveals that zombies can be neutralized through substantial damage to their bodies, not solely relying on headshots for elimination. While headshots offer a swift and efficient means of dispatching them, alternative methods such as electrocution, exposure to gas, or targeting various body parts can also prove effective. It’s noteworthy that zombies occasionally respond to pain, as evidenced by actions like clutching their injured legs when struck in the knee or reacting to the effects of fire damage.

Regular Zombies

Zeke

These common zombies are the primary undead threat in the game. While individually not highly dangerous, they pose a significant risk in large groups. Their main strategy is to overwhelm survivors with their sheer numbers.

One remarkable ability they exhibit is their capacity to stack on top of each other, forming a pyramid when trying to reach survivors at higher levels. This enables them to climb swiftly. In cases where a survivor is surrounded by enough Zekes, they can pin the survivor down, necessitating assistance from others to free them.

When Zekes detect a survivor aiming a weapon, they may attempt to dodge to evade gunfire and disrupt the survivor’s aim. As the difficulty levels increase, these zombies become more intelligent, resilient, and appear in even larger hordes, making them a formidable challenge for players.

Zombified Survivor

Survivors who are not rescued in time after being incapacitated, have been downed repeatedly (the number of times depends on the difficulty level and class perks), or fail to cure themselves from infection will writhe uncontrollably on the ground before transforming into freshly turned Zekes.

These zombified survivors, having recently turned, are slightly faster and more resistant to damage than their regular counterparts, making them tougher to eliminate. Echter, they behave similarly to regular Zekes. If the transformed survivor was carrying items such as a Medkit, defense kit, or other supplies, these items will be dropped for other living survivors to pick up. But if the survivor was carrying a Virus Sample, it will be lost.

Zombified Soldier

In certain scenarios within a chapter, soldiers or even armed or unarmed civilians can come under attack. If they aren’t promptly rescued or sustain too much damage from attacking Zekes, they will become infected and eventually turn into Zekes themselves.

These zombified soldiers, having recently turned, are slightly faster and more resistant to damage, making them more challenging to eliminate. Echter, their behavior remains consistent with regular Zekes. When infected, soldiers often shout to alert survivors that they are in danger of turning or if they are surrounded, serving as a warning to others.

These variations in zombie types and behaviors add depth and complexity to the World War Z game, requiring players to adapt their strategies based on the evolving threat.

Special Enemies

These unique adversaries, known as special zombies, present a more significant threat to survivors than regular zekes due to their distinctive appearances, attire, and sometimes extraordinary abilities or attributes stemming from their individual histories or infection circumstances. Gasbag

When provoked, Gasbags release a toxic gas, causing gradual damage to anyone caught within its vicinity. Even after their demise, Gasbags emit a substantial gas cloud at their location, creating a green smokescreen that obstructs vision for several seconds. Entering this gas cloud results in continuous damage and impaired vision due to green liquid droplets. Precise shots to a Gasbag’s head can prevent the release of poisonous gas upon death, but shooting the corpse afterward still releases some gas, though without any harmful effects. Due to the danger posed by the gas, it effectively denies access to an area until it disperses.

Bull

Bulls, meanwhile, are formidable adversaries clad in riot armor. When a Bull spots a player, it pounds the ground and charges at its target with incredible speed, lifting the victim into the air before slamming them onto the ground repeatedly. The Bull maintains its grip on the victim until it is killed, the survivor is incapacitated or killed, or they are rescued using various methods. If a Bull collides with a wall or obstacle during its charge, it briefly staggers. While Bulls may attempt a few melee attacks before charging, their riot gear offers significant protection against damage. Echter, once the helmet visor is shattered, they become vulnerable to headshots from the front. Attacks to their exposed back are also highly effective.

Screamer

Screamers, identifiable by their high-visibility uniforms and megaphones, are a unique threat. Their screams attract both the living and the dead, leading to more zombies converging on survivors’ locaties. Failing to eliminate Screamers promptly can result in an overwhelming horde that’s challenging to handle. Screamers often position themselves in hard-to-reach but visible locations. Their screams emit a shockwave, disorienting survivors within its radius for a brief duration.

Infector

Infectors, recognizable by their straitjackets, spit a deadly fluid projectile at survivors from short distances. This fluid partially obscures a survivor’s vision with dark blotches that dissipate gradually. Infected survivors must promptly disinfect themselves to avoid turning into zombies. Infected survivors experience a deteriorating vision with pulsating borders and darkening screens. They can bring an Infector to the ground with enough damage, but if not properly dealt with, she will revive with full health. Survivors must finish her off with additional gunfire, explosions, or melee attacks to prevent her revival.

Bomber

Bombers are zombies equipped with explosives and military gear. They pose a significant danger up close as they trigger a countdown to a deadly explosion when near survivors. Shooting their explosive vests from a distance can set them off early, eliminating the Bomber and nearby zombies. Precise shots to their legs or body, besides the chest, make them collapse, allowing for a melee finisher to defuse the explosives. If not defused in time, the countdown speeds up, leading to an instant explosion if shot. Defusing prevents explosions, and shooting the corpse won’t trigger it.

Stimuleren

Ten slotte, Boosters, wearing tattered hazardous material suits, have a unique ability to strengthen other zombies by emitting a fog created from damaged virus samples they carry. This ability can also affect other infected survivors, civilians, and soldiers, enhancing their capabilities. Killing a Booster dissipates the fog, but the zekes previously strengthened by it will maintain their enhanced strength until it naturally wears off or they are eliminated. The Booster was introduced in the Booster Zombie Update.
