This guide can assist folks who are new to Sky Base Venus in steering clear of confusion regarding aspects that might seem clear to seasoned simulation game players.

Game Objective

Sky Base Venus is a computer simulation game where you control a space station floating in the clouds above Venus. Your main goals are to pick the right resources and equipment to send from Earth to Venus during specific launch windows. Eenmaal daar, you need to install and use these items to support the crew’s needs, accomplish goals, and tackle science missions for the station. Successfully reaching goals and completing science missions earns science points, influencing the station’s annual budget for more Earth deliveries.

The initial focus in building the base is setting up solar power infrastructure. Although you can always send other materials from Earth, the budget won’t support endless shipments. You’re given various technologies to purchase from Earth or assemble on-site from raw materials. These technologies help you extract gases from Venus’s clouds and convert them into essential things like food, water, oxygen, waterstof, and plastics through a series of steps.

The challenge lies in dealing with limited solar energy at night. Adapting your operations to energy availability helps optimize production. Figuring out the right quantity of each piece of equipment for efficient base operation is also tricky. Budget constraints mean you must gradually build up the station over time, giving you a chance to observe how systems work together. This helps you decide what equipment to invest in for the next shipment and what supplies to keep sourcing from Earth. Various strategies can lead to success.

If you can make the station sustainably produce energy, water, oxygen, plastics, en waterstof, you gain the ability to survive and be somewhat productive even if Earth shipments decrease later in the game. Echter, unexpected events may challenge your creativity in running the base until shipments resume.

Game Interface

In Sky Base Venus, the main screen serves as a dashboard with information and controls along the edges. The central part displays an aerial view from above the base, allowing manipulation through mouse movements for different views and zoom levels. An icon in the upper left corner re-centers the base in the view.

Everything on this page is accessible through the mouse. Hovering the pointer over items triggers pop-up text explaining what you’re looking at. The mouse enables clicking into pop-up menus or selecting items for graphing or numerical entries. The right bottom features a “?” for help, a ‘=’ icon for the main menu (to save and quit games), and a large pause/un-pause icon ” ll “. The game automatically pauses when observation or input is needed, requiring a possible “OK” press or un-pause to restart the game clock. Three time compression icons ” > , >> , >>> ” offer time compression modes to speed up or slow down the action.

On the left bottom, hammer icons open a pop-up menu to choose equipment for installation. A spaceship icon leads to a separate screen for ordering materials and equipment from Earth. A check mark icon shows a list of goals, suggested through on-screen pop-ups. The beaker icon opens a pop-up menu of science missions to choose from.

Clicking the Hammer Icon allows further clicks into specific equipment categories. Hovering over each equipment type reveals its operating parameters. Clicking on installed equipment highlights it. If not on board, clicking will build one from available raw materials.

After acquiring equipment in Sky Base Venus, you can place it on the platform by clicking the desired location. The equipment’s base is highlighted, and after un-pausing, it takes time to install and glows red. Clicking on the equipment reveals a control screen where you can decide its operation, daily schedule, and priority for power relative to other equipment. Recycling equipment to raw materials for 1/2 credit is possible via the recycle icon. To close the pop-up control, click any empty part of the sky base platform. Clicking the Hammer icon dismisses the equipment menu.

The upper right side of the screen features a resource list (inventory/max capacity) with a slider bar for hidden resources. Key resource inventories (voedsel, water, power, oxygen) are color-coded along the top, indicating if they are increasing or decreasing.

Near the top, countdowns for days until the next shipment and the next Earth delivery are displayed, along with the cash on hand for those deliveries. Aanvullend, de % progress graph for ongoing science missions is shown.

In the upper right corner, the current science point count/budgeted count is displayed, resetting with each periodic performance review.

Aan de rechterkant, a 24-hour graph is available for troubleshooting equipment-related issues by showing resource changes.

Daaronder, information and settings for altitude (affecting solar power) and the base’s location (needed for some science missions) are present. A center of gravity screen assists in keeping the base balanced as you add equipment.

Purchase Order Screen

Clicking on the Rocket Ship Icon in Sky Base Venus pauses the game, taking you to the purchase order screen. The initial order required to start the game appears filled out with typical items, but you can customize it if desired. Subsequent shipments start blank or with marked recurring items.

The page provides information on the typical usage of key resources (Voedsel, water, Oxygen, enz.) to ensure you have enough until the next shipment. You can mark items as recurring, automatically adding them to future orders unless adjusted before the shipment.

The upper right corner displays the total available to spend, and the current order total cost is in the middle at the top. Information on how shipping costs are calculated is also available for optimal order adjustments.

To add a new item, Klik op de + box, and a line item like “solar panel” appears at the bottom. Use the mouse to bring up the pop-up menu, and slide to see all possible items. Hovering over a choice displays its operating parameters. Adjust item amounts with up/down buttons or by typing on the keyboard. The total order cost, including shipping, increases as you add items. If over-ordered, cancel to adjust below budget. You can increase the order before shipping if your budget rises.

The game pauses right before any shipment. Click OK without un-pausing. Click the Rocket ship icon, ensure your order is up-to-date, OK it, and it will ship right away or after un-pausing if needed.

Strategy Tips

In het spel, if your base in Sky Base Venus runs out of oxygen, water, or food for an extended period, and your crew doesn’t survive, the game typically ends. Aanvankelijk, you can buy these essentials from Earth to keep going, but the ultimate challenge is achieving self-sufficiency.

The risk in pursuing self-sufficiency is that the on-site processes for critical materials may also consume other on-site materials. Without monitoring, you might use up all the water on food growth or hydrogen conversion, leaving your colonists without water even if you’re shipping the basic amount from Earth. Consider both what processes produce and consume when operating them.

Ensure you run enough science missions to exceed your targeted science point goal consistently. This prevents your cash budget from depleting too rapidly, allowing you to achieve self-sufficiency before budget constraints become severe.

Balancing the various elements becomes a challenge and the source of enjoyment in the game. The fun lies in mastering this balancing act.
