This is a method I have been utilizing to gain an advantage in the looting aspect of the game.
Farming Strategy
In the barrens, there are several ways to acquire loot, either by looting crates or searching dead bodies you come across. However, one of the most effective methods I have discovered for farming loot is by participating in the Arena trials. Please note that the strategy may change with future updates.
To set up this method, you will need the following items:
- Catcher 41 Shotgun (capable of one-shotting most zombies with headshots)
- Ample ammunition for the shotgun (approximately 500 rounds, with a minimum of 300)
- Basic medical supplies such as bandages, painkillers, splints
- Some food and water
- Mask with filters, preferably with 2 to 3 spare filters
- Weapon repair kits
- Sheet metal wall
After numerous attempts at the Arena, I encountered issues with zombie spawning and bodies piling up, so the results may vary. However, the overall outcome should remain consistent.
When you initiate the wave defense, you will be directed to a building known as the defense building. In the current version of the game, you can construct structures such as a sheet metal wall. Head upstairs to the defense building and place the sheet metal wall in the doorway at the top. It’s okay if it clips through the boards.
That completes most of the setup. The wall will prevent zombies from reaching the second floor, and they won’t attempt to break it down. This leaves you completely safe to eliminate them as they stand idle on the stairs. Otherwise, they will wander around the bottom. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. The only way to lure them to the stairs is by standing near any of the ledges closest to the stairs. But be cautious, as those ledges can be slippery based on my testing.
Quick Tips
Depending on your level when entering the arena, it’s advisable to bring a high-caliber sniper rifle with iron sights to help conserve ammunition. There is a vending machine downstairs on the side of the building where you can purchase additional ammo if needed.
Zombies will accumulate on the stairs. While they do not have collision with the bodies themselves, you do, which can pose a challenge when trying to navigate back up to the second floor. If you get stuck, try wiggling using the Q and E keys. Occasionally, you may need to descend to clear out zombies that are trapped in an overturned bus. Having an alternative way up besides the stairs, such as building a makeshift contraption on the side, could be beneficial. I have included pictures below depicting the appearance of the door and a crate walkway I use to access the second floor when the stairs are blocked by bodies.
Explosive zombies can cause damage if they explode near you. Aim for headshots to prevent them from detonating.
Titan zombies will spawn between waves 7 and 10, with a total of approximately 4 to 5. The easiest way I have found to kill them is by using molotov cocktails, as they seem particularly vulnerable to fire. Molotovs can also assist with clearing out zombies on the stairs if they cluster together. Tossing one at the bottom of the stairs when it’s crowded will cause them to stop moving, as they avoid fire, and their only exit is blocked. You can then throw another molotov right in the middle of them for an effortless multi-kill.
After completing the fight and claiming your rewards, have some crates nearby to store the loot. If you have spare ammunition, you can immediately reenter the arena and try again. The arena master may mention a 2-day wait period before attempting another trial, but the shipping containers in the area have beds where you can rest for 2 days, allowing you to try again afterward. Simply rinse and repeat the process.
Remember to keep extra food and filters in those additional crates, as the shipping containers do not protect you from acid rain. Since the beds serve as your respawn point, getting caught in a deathloop is a possibility, so exercise caution.
